FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Unless You Are Using Code Quick, You're
Working Too Hard!

1. What are the FCC Code Requirements for
Amateur Licenses?
|
Morse Code is no longer required for Amateur Radio
licenses in the US. However professional broadcast licensing and some
boating associations require it. It is always the simplest and
cheapest means of DX, and winning contests. |
|
You will find that as the CW bands
become less crowded, you will reach the world with just a little power using
CW.
It's first choice of contesters who need lots of contacts in the shortest
possible time. |
2. Why learn code since isn't it
old fashioned?
|
The following answer is excerpted from an article by Patrick Tice, WA0TDA,
"No Code or Know Code??" in the Fall 1996 issue of
Handi-Ham. (Courage HANDI-HAM Systems 3915

|
Code testing is necessary to assure that the Amateur Service has
disciplined operators. |
|
Amateurs who know code
assures that the world has a supply of operators who can communicate with
basic equipment when other means fail. |
|
Code study teaches discipline that is eventually translated into
advancements in Amateur Radio operation and technology. |
|
No-coders already have a huge spectrum in which to operate and should
leave the HF spectrum for the use of "real" hams who have passed code tests. |
|
Code is a lot of fun and it should not be eliminated as a mode of
operation. |
|
(Your author would add) CW signals can get through when no others
can with less power and less interference. Consider the communication
potential of a nation in which every citizen knew code. In a civil
emergency such as war, this ability could prove to be a dramatic national
resource. We are aware that the Al Queda is well trained in the use and encryption of CW!!
Shouldn't America be? |
3. How long will it take me to master
code?
|
Our program know as the '30 Day Plan For Morse Mastery' is designed to
teach you the code as sound-alikes. It will get you to 5WPM in about 12
hours and increase your code speed to above 13wpm during the
first 30 days. To reach this goal, the average person needs three twenty minute sessions each day. |
|
The Audio CDs are best for initial learning but
thousands of students have used
the Code Quick 2000 computer software program to pace their own progress successfully to 20wpm and
more. |
|
The average student will need 2-3 months total to get to 20wpm, although
we have a report from a ham who went from zero to 20wpm in nine days! |
|
The most important success ingredient is regular practice which keeps
moving us up the speed ladder as fast as possible. Remember, no pain, no gain! |
4. Do you use the Farnsworth approach?
|
YES however: The secret to learning code right is to learn it as language. People
who develop fast code skills (30wpm+) are without a doubt processing the code in the
Language centers of the brain. When you start learning code, if you try to do it as
dahs and dits, the non language part of the brain which usually deals with thuds, clunks
and squeaks in your environment come into play. This section of the brain is quite
sound specific. Thus if you learn code at 5wpm you will have a plateau at 8wpm.
Next work away at 8wpm and you will gain a new set of code which will take you to
about 11wpm etc. It takes 5-6 sets of code to do it this way. Farnsworth
understood this fact so he taught code at 20wpm and varied the timing of the
presentation. His idea was sound in that he made sure you only learned code at one
speed. This is the easiest way to have the code stick and get through the 20 wpm
test IF YOU DO IT THE WRONG WAY! Most people who do this never really become code
proficient since they can hear code sent only at a 20-23wpm window rate. Code
proficiency comes when you apply the language brain to the language task of learning code.
We do this through sound alikes. Each character is actually heard at first in
English instead of dahs and dits. It's amazing the difference. Oh yes, just as
an aside, we do follow the Farnsworth approach in that our code is actually formed at 7wpm
faster than the speed we are teaching. Our software does not allow the learner to
send 20wpm character speed and then send it at 5wpm. We believe that any use of such
would defeat the role of the language brain and slow the progress of the learner. We
present the code at the same speed as normal speech so that it can be heard calling out
the character sound alike in plain English |
5. How will I know when I am
ready for going on the air.
|
Code Quick comes with numerous tests (Code Quick 2000 contains 999!)
You will know when you are ready. If you can only copy 5WPM, don't
send faster than that. Just tell the person you are contacting, "QRS 5." |
|
Prepare yourself by relaxing.
Everyone you hear on the air one day was just where you are now. Most hams
want to help you! Jump in with your call sign at a break and then
listen for your call to let you enter the round table. |
6. How do I download CQ 2000?
| |
Just click on the download button below and you will be on your way.
Tell the program where you want the program to be saved in your computer hard drive
or auxiliary drive and sit back. The whole process will take about 30 minutes.
Click Download. |
7. What do I do after it is downloaded?
| |
Find the file you downloaded in your Windows Explorer and double click on
it. (Be sure you did not download to your desktop!) That will extract your program from the compressed version which you downloaded.
Next, find the "setup.exe" (It may just say "Setup.") file in the uncompressed files you just decompressed.
Double click on it and then follow each direction presented in the
Microsoft installation software to complete the setup process. |
8. How do I start my new program?
| |
Close your Windows Explorer and click "Start,"
"Programs," and find the Code Quick snail icon for Code Quick 2000. Click
it and away you go. You will be prompted to register your program. Call the
number it asks you to call and give our nice operator your credit card information and she
will provide you a password and registration number. The charge for this is
$34.95. Then get set for the time of your life! |
